Definz!

Jake decided to pee through his diaper today while sitting in my bed.  SO, as I was taking the sheets off so I could wash them, Jake stood in front of my mirror jumping up and down saying, "Definz! Definz!"  I looked at him and it took me a minute to figure out what he was saying.

At Jackson's last home basketball game, we were all stomping our feet on the bleachers yelling, "Defense!  Defense!!"

Funny how kids pick up on the most random things and then repeat them weeks down the road :)

When I picked Ryan up from preschool today, Miss Tiffany told me that Ryan told her, out of the blue, "I'm getting so big Miss Tiffany."  So funny!

Cougarettes in Concert {2012}

My mom, Molly, Paula, Sophie, Emilee, and I all went to the Cougarette's in Concert tonight.  I know, I know, we are not BYU lovers, but we all admit that the Cougarette's are pretty amazing :)  When Paula told Sophie where they were going tonight, Sophie said to her mom, "But mom, we don't like BYU!"  Too funny.

We met up at Gloria's Little Italy (yes, I have been here 3 times in the last 2 months, ha ha) for dinner before the show.  It was delish!
The guy that plays the accordian came and played for our table.  He asked Sophie what her favorite Disney movie is and she told him Little Mermaid.  He played a song from the movie for her.  I won't lie, I think its kinda annoying to have him come over and play at each table, but it was also kind of fun.  It might be better just to have him play for the restaurant??

One of the girls that was on Molly's drill team last year is on the Cougaretts this year.  She did a really good job.  We stayed after to talk to her.  She is a cute girl and super tiny :)
The top picture is Molly with Savannah, her mom, and her little sister.  The picture to the left is Molly with Savannah, her former drill team girl.  And the picture to the right is Paula and Sophie--Sophie wasn't too thrilled to have her picture taken, ha ha.
The Cougarettes were amazing--I was so in awe of everything they could do and their skill--made me wish that I could still dance :(  All of their dances were entertaining--even the lyrical/slower dances, which I think can get a little old.  Funny thing, the Cougarette's had just performed their 2011 National Championship title winning hip hop routine.  After Sophie said, "I can do everything they just did."  She was dead serious, too.  Hilarious!

Something fun that they did this year was a video interview of each girl that they played in between dances.  It made it so we were able to get to know each of the girls a little better.  Some of them had scripted out something to say and were very, well, boring.  Others just went with the flow and said what they needed to without reading it.  Those were the best and the funnest to listen to and watch.

I had a random kid take our picture after the show.  I showed him my camera and was telling him how to use it and he said, "It's ok; I have this exact camera."  In the past when people have told me that I end up with a horrible picture.  BUT, this kid didn't lie.  He took 3 pictures--he zoomed in, zoomed out, got a close up--and they were all good :)
The girls after the show.  From L to R: Me, Molly, Paula with Sophie in front of her, my mom Sandra, and Emilee.

We had a really fun night.  I'm glad I was able to go.

Ryan's 4th Family Birthday PARrrrty

Today we had Ryan's family party to celebrate him turning 4!  Ryan has been watching 'Peter Pan' lately and decided he wanted a Captain Hook party.

We decided to have Ryan's party before Jim goes to Korea in March.  I thought having the party one week before his actual birthday rather than at the end of the month would be better.  Jim made arrangements for us to use the armory.  We had to schedule the party for a Friday night because the Armory was being used on the weekend for a unit that was drilling.  I was fine with Friday--it would be hard for people to come straight from work, but it would make it so we didn't take up their weekend :)

I got a call from Jim on Wednesday--that is 2 days before the party--telling me that we couldn't use the armory.  They were having problems with high levels of lead so they weren't letting any outside parties use the armory.  I thought it was a joke.  Was this really happening?  Of course I took it out on Jim, but after hanging up with him I immediately called to see about reserving our church.  The church was already booked for Friday night.  It was available Saturday morning/early afternoon though.  I told the girl to put me down for Saturday morning, but I wanted to see if our Stake Center was available.

I had to call around to see who was in charge of scheduling the Stake Center.  No one really knew who was in charge of scheduling, but I got a few numbers that I called and left messages.  Wednesday night I hadn't heard back from any of the people I'd left messages to.

On Thursday morning I thought I'd try one more time before heading to the gym.  If I didn't get in touch with anyone, I was going to have to bite the bullet and have the party at our house.  I just feel like our house is a bit tiny to have 40+ adults and wild kids :)  I called and no one answered, crap.

Luckily, I got a call back around 8:30am.  I felt bad--the lady that does the scheduling for the Stake Center isn't someone that I know.  But I guess she works graveyards and she had just got home from work and was trying to get her kids off to school when I called that morning, oops.  But she did call back and the Stake Center was available.  There was a group using the cultural hall from 5-6pm so she told me to give them until 6:20p or so to get out.  That was completely fine with me as long as I didn't have to have the party at my house.  Besides my house being on the small side, I had let my cleaning slide so I would've had to fit cleaning into my schedule some how.

I emailed and texted everyone that was coming to the party and let them know the minor time and location change.  Everyone was ok with it, whew.  It was then back to preparing for the party :)

I had already done a lot of what I needed to do in advance, but I still had plenty to do to get ready for Ryan's party.  I made a list and checked everything off as I went.  If you know me, I'm all about making lists and checking them off as I go, ha ha.
One of the items on my list of things to do was to put the olives on the little swords.  The boys were more than happy to help me with this.  I made sure they could actually do it to and up to my standards.  They could so they got the go ahead to help.  Jake wasn't the best at getting the olive on the sword how I liked it so he just ate the ruined olives for me :)
I also had to make and frost cupcakes for the party.  I made a vanilla cupcake with chocolate buttercream frosting.  They were actually really good.  I actually prefer vanilla (well, cream cheese) frosting over chocolate, but this chocolate buttercream frosting is amazing!

I made it through my entire list was showered and ready to roll by 5pm.  At 5:45pm, I headed over to the Stake Center.  There was a group there before us practicing soccer so I wasn't given a key to get into the church.  I didn't want them to get out early and lock up before I got there.

I got into the church just fine and the soccer practice even got out right at 6pm so we were able to get every set up by 6:30pm.
Some of the decor.  Starting at the top and going clockwise: the food table, the sword olives, the tick-tock crocodile on the tables with chocolate gold coins, and the cupcakes.

Pixie dust, to kind of tie in the Peter Pan theme even though it was more of just a pirate party :) and  the treasure at the end of the treasure hunt.
The plank--one of the games for the party.
Jim was in charge of making the Cream of Broccoli soup for the party.  It was a hit!  Everyone really like the soup-that's why I had him make it and not me :)  Jim is an excellent cook!

After eating, we did the treasure hunt.  Ryan wasn't so much interested in the treasure hunt so we went on without the birthday boy.

I found this treasure map online.  It was blank so I colored it in in Photoshop and added the Red Skin Camp, etc.  I printed a small copy for each of the kids so they each had a map.  I also printed each of the land marks on their own page and taped them around the cultural hall for our treasure hunt.

I left the treasure hunt until the last minute.  I knew what I wanted to do; I just couldn't wrap my brain around it to do it.  I called my mom around 3 pm on Friday afternoon and she helped me make up some clues over the phone for the treasure hunt.

The treasure hunt was super easy for the kids.  I made it simple, but we had put up the pictures of the landmarks in the cultural hall so while we were waiting to eat, the kids had already found all of the locations.  It wasn't a big deal though.

The first clue is where I gave all of the kids their pirate gear.  They each got a pirate hat, a hook, eye patch, and telescope.
Getting the kids all of their pirate gear.
Ryan not being interested in his birthday treasure hunt :)

They found the treasure!  Lacy helped me out (she pretty much made them--gotta give her some major kudos here) and made little treasure boxes for each of the kids.  They were SO cute!
I found the big treasure box at Hobby Lobby.  It is paper mache and I just painted it.  It turned out really cute.
After the treasure hunt, we had the kids walk the plank.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Ryan after we finished up with the games.  He soaked it all in!
He was so cute blowing out his candles.  He managed to get them all without spitting :)
And after cake, Ryan opened his presents.  He got some really fun gifts!

We spent the rest of the evening chatting and the kids ran around.
Jake binged on all of the sugar he could get his hands on!
Even the adults enjoyed wearing the pirate gear.

We had a really fun evening with family.  I think Ryan enjoyed his pirate party with all of his cousins, too.

Happy 4th Birthday Ryan.
We love you!

Fieldtrip to the Dentist

Ryan's preschool class took a field trip to the dentist today.  They learned all about the dentist and what goes on when you make a visit to the dentist's office.

The first thing they learned about were getting x-rays.  The kids learned that this is like taking a picture of your teeth so the dentist can see if you have any sugar bugs.  I liked the term sugar bugs--great way for kids to understand :)
The top picture is proof Ryan was there.  He refuses to participate and stand by the kids on field trips.  Drives me NUTS!

After learning about the x-rays, they went to the next room where the dental assistant showed the kids all of the tools that they use to clean teeth.  She showed them the spin brush, the water squirter, and Mr. Slurpee that slurps up all of the water out of the patients mouth.  She also showed them the toothpaste they use and told them that it has pumice in it to help really scrub their teeth clean.  They also got to smell it.

Then the dentist came in and talked to the kids.  He talked to them about eating good foods to make their teeth healthy.  Funny thing happened, when he asked the kids what food they should eat that would make their teeth healthy, the kids answered with what they know.  One said chicken, another said macaroni, but one kid blurted out alcohol!  I hope that child thought the dentist meant what we shouldn't be eating/drinking :/  I know Ryan doesn't even know what alcohol is--if I asked him, it'd be like that scene in 'Big Daddy' when Adam Sandler asked all of Julian's friends about drugs and alcohol, ha ha.  "Do you know what rum is?", he asks.  "Rumpelstiltskin?" LOL!
This is the dentist office where I take Ryan and Jake.  Ryan was patiently waiting to brush the stuffed horse's teeth--I told him he had to wait.
Miss Tiffany's little girl Macy got to come on the field trip, too. She is super cute!  In the top right picture, the kids were finally able to play with the stuffed horse and brush his teeth.  I love the bottom right picture.  Ryan is checking out his teeth with the over sized mirror when he finally got his turn with the horse, lol.
When we are finished learning about the dentist, we took a quick couple of pictures with all of the kids and then we went back to preschool for 1/2 hour.

Jake and I decided to just wait for Ryan instead of going home and coming right back.  We went downstairs and listened to the story Miss Tiffany read the kids.  Ryan was soo sleepy--he was falling asleep sitting up while listening to the book.  I thought for sure we would go home and he would take a good nap.  Boy, was I wrong.

My mom was coming to help me frost and decorate Ryan's cake for his birthday party tomorrow night, and Ry knew she was coming so he refused to take a nap even though he was tired.
Ryan and Grandma decorating his pirate ship cake.  I actually assembled and frosted the cake all by myself.  I am quite proud :)
We got the cake all decorated.  For the finishing touch, I used Ryan's toy canon and pirate guy a from his pirate ship nd put them on the cake.  Ryan freaked out (because he was so tired) telling me toys don't go on cakes cause they'll get dirty!  I had to put the cake away--out of sight out of mind.  He finally calmed down about 30 minutes later after Grandma had left to go home.

Then I thought he would fall asleep while we got dinner ready, but surprisingly he didn't.  BUT, by the time bath time rolled around Ryan was a wreck!  I seriously haven't seen him freak out like he did tonight, wowza! We finally got him bathed and ready for bed all the while he was sobbing and screaming.  I think he was asleep within seconds of getting in bed.

Tomorrow is his family birthday party.  I don't think we'll make mention of the p.a.r.t.y. until after he'd had his nap :)

Getting Ready for a Pirate Parrrrrty!

We've been getting ready for Ryan's pirate party all week (more like for the last 2 weeks, ha ha).  My boys are loving all of the pirate gear floating around our place, but they were really happy when the pirate hooks were finished :)
Arrr!  Ryan wouldn't let me get a picture of him with his hook, but he was loving playing with his :)

Quick Trip to SLC

I had to run to Salt Lake today to do an exchange--not me, I never have to return/exchange anything, ha ha.  It was something that I didn't know when we'd be able to make it to Salt Lake again and I just wanted to get it taken care of so we went today.

We decided to make it a fun trip and took the boys to the Living Planet Aquarium in Sandy.
This was our 2nd trip to the aquarium and it was great.

When we pulled up to the aquarium, the parking lot was FULL!  It was actually beyond full--no where to park.  We were lucky and found a group that just pulling out so we were able to find a parking spot.  BUT, were were a little worried about what it would be like inside, ugh.

We decided to brave the crowds and take the boys in anyway.  It wasn't as bad as we thought it would be inside; I think most of the people that were there were getting ready to leave.  The biggest problem were the adults!  They would park in front of the displays and just stand there not letting the kids in to see, weird.

We had a really good time.  I like the aquarium because it doesn't take all day.  We were there for about an hour.  We could have stayed a bit longer, but we saw everything we wanted to see and did everything we wanted to do.

We let the boys use their Valentine money from Grandma and Grandpa Mangelson to get a souvenir.  The boys picked squishy animal light up toys, which were fine because they were within their budget :)

The boys checking out the fish and displays.  I LOVE that Jake had to bring George with him, so cute :)
The boys played in the play area for a little while.  They loved going through the caves and exploring.
The boys were playing in this cave so I went over to get a picture of them.  This other little boy snuck in and wouldn't get out.  Ry was so mad!  He kept telling the kid to get out and to quit looking at his mom (because I was telling Ryan and Jake to look at me so I could take their pic, ha ha).

After the aquarium, we took the boys to get something to eat.  We were going to go to Noodles per Ryan's request, BUT there was nobody there eating and we got weirded out, lol.  We went to the Training Table instead.

Training Table was pretty dead, too, so the boys could be loud and horse around.  I don't normally let the boys straddle the benches and stand up and look over to other booths :)

Have I mentioned how much I LOVE the ultimate dipping sauce at Training Table?  Oh man, I LOVE and I mean love that sauce.  I literally think I could drink the stuff :)  The food was good, too.  If I didn't know that the place was good, we would never eat there.  It's pretty gross inside--the decor is old and outdated, the benches are all ripped up, the whole place is in need of a good scrubbin'.  I think they'd be a good candidate for Restaurant Impossible on the Food Network :)

It was a quick trip north, but we made it fun.

2 Date Nights in 1 Week!

A little back ground...SO, Jim and I had originally planned on going to dinner and a movie on Thursday night for our belated Valentine's Date.  Lacy said she and Spence would come with us, but she didn't know if she could find a babysitter to watch her boys that could stay late enough for them to go to dinner AND a movie.

SO, Jim and I decided we'd go to dinner with Spencer and Lacy on Thursday and then we'd go to a movie on Saturday (we really wanted to go to a movie together).  But, when Lacy's little guy got sick, they couldn't go out on Thursday but we decided we still wanted to.  They weren't sure if they'd even be able to go out on Saturday so if they weren't able to go, we would cancel our babysitter and just stay home.

Well, they were able to go on Saturday so we went out again--for the 2nd time in one week.
It's definitely not our norm, but it was fun.

SO, Jim and I went out with Spencer and Lacy tonight.  We headed to Orem for dinner around 5pm not knowing it was State Wrestles so EVERY restaurant would have outrageous wait times.  Seriously, we thought we were 1) eating early enough to beat the dinner crowds/rush and 2) didn't think we'd have to deal with all of Millard County for dinner.  We were short on time so we decided to just go to Noodles and Company, ugh.  That is where we go when we have our boys with us because they'll eat it well but whatevs. Desperate times call for desperate measures and I was really hungry so...

We headed to the movie theater after dinner to watch "This Means War".  For some reason we thought (or I thought) we had plenty of time since we weren't spending a lot of time at dinner, but time got away from us.  We were still driving at 6:20pm and the movie started at 6:50pm.  It is opening weekend so I thought the theater was going to be packed and we would be sitting on the front row.

I was surprised when the theater still had plenty of seats when we got there around 6:35pm--we should've known right then...
The movie was SUPER cheesy but Lacy and I still liked it.

These two made it more bearable for the ladies :)  I LOVED Reese's hair in the movie, too!

We got out of the movie at 8:30pm and we joked with the guys that we still had 30 minutes until the mall closed so we should shop.  We actually ran in Downeast Outfitters-they have so many cute things in their store right now!  While we were looking in the store, Spencer found some mochi ice cream that he wanted to try.  I decided it was the perfect time to take a picture of our group.  Jim was disgusted.
Spencer and Lacy & Jim and me
I'm glad Krew-bug is on the mend so Spence and Lacy were able to get away for a couple of hours.
We had a great time with the Nielsen's tonight.

GNO {02.17.12}

I was invited to go to dinner and a movie with the girls tonight.  I was thrilled to go--who doesn't love a night out with just the girls?!

We were going to go to dinner at the Olive Garden but the wait was an hour and a half!  Holy cow!!  I suggested Gloria's Little Italy.  There wasn't a wait time so that is where we went.

I won't lie--I get nervous suggesting places to eat for fear that they will hate it and then be mad.  BUT, I think everyone was ok with Gloria's and enjoyed their meal.
All of us at dinner, from L to R: Sabrina Teasdale, Me, Merissa McQuivey, Tiffany Harrison, Melissa Devereax, and Robin Wrathall.  Lacy was supposed to come tonight, but her little guy is still sick :( so she had to miss.
Another picture because I wasn't happy with the picture at the table.  I'm not super happy with this picture either (of myself) but what can you do.  I'm sure it was annoying to request to have multiple pictures taken :/

We went to "The Vow" after dinner.  The movie was pretty good--a little cheesy, not one that I would see twice or buy when it comes out, but still good.

I had a great time out with the girls.
Can't wait until next time...

Date Night with Jim

Jim and I were supposed to go out to dinner for a date night with Spencer and Lacy tonight.  BUT, Krew is pretty sick so they decided they better not leave him.  In fact, they were debating on whether to take him to the hospital or not because he wasn't drinking and was borderline dehydrated.

Anyway, Jim and I decided we'd still go out--kind of a late Valentine's date.  We had Audrey come over and watch the boys for us while we went out.

We went to dinner at La Jolla Groves.  Jim and I really like that place and it didn't disappoint tonight.  Our food was great and we even got a little dessert, yum.
Jim watches America's Test Kitchen on PBS on Saturday's.  One Saturday they made a triple chocolate mousse cake that he's been dying to make.  Well, when we saw it on the dessert menu tonight we had to try it.  It was really good!  Just enough dessert, too, to fulfill my sweet tooth :)
Jim and I after dinner.
After dinner, Jim was thrilled when I suggested we run a couple of errands.  We went to Target and to the mall.  I really want a pair of colored skinny jeans, but my butt and legs disagree :(  They are so cute...

We were home by 8:45pm.  The boys had a great time with Audrey and we had a fab time being by ourselves!

Valentine's Day {2012}

It's the day of love and we had a busy day planned!

This morning, the boys and I went to the gym.  We took the ladies at the daycare a little Valentine, too.  I think they liked them.  Lacy gave me the idea found here--we did the "Bee Mine" card with a Burt's Bees chapstick attached to it. We made the same Valentine for Miss Tiffany.  Simple to make, but very cute and practical :)

After an amazing pump workout with Tara (she totally kicked my butt and she's 8 1/2 months pregnant!), we came home to start baking!  I made cinnamon rolls for Jim for Valentine's, and I also made sugar cookies to take to Annie & Cory's house.  I had good intentions of showering before taking Ryan to preschool, but mixing cinnamon roll dough and getting it in to proof then mixing up sugar cookie dough and getting in the refrigerator to "relax" took longer than I anticipated.

I also had to finish up Ry's Valentine's for preschool.  Yes, I started the Valentine's probably 2 weeks ago.  I had good intentions of getting them done well before February 14th, and well, we all know how that goes :)  I was finishing them up minutes before leaving to take Ry to school.  The main problem was I wanted Ryan to write his own name on his Valentine tags and he wouldn't.  He did two and said he was done--little turd.  In the end, I got them done and they turned out pretty cute.  I just hope the kids like them.

Jake and I dropped Ry off preschool and then we headed home  so I could do more baking.

The cinnamon roll dough was double in size so it was ready to roll out.  I got the cinnamon rolls ready and they had to rise again until double in size.  Then I worked on the sugar cookies.  I got them all cut out and on the pans ready to cook.
Cinnamon rolls ready to go in the oven.
Minor problem--my upper oven had something that was burning/smoking.  I even scraped everything out of the bottom of the oven just a couple of days ago so I'm not sure why I had to have issues with it today.  BUT,  I didn't want to ruin the cinnamon rolls or sugar cookies so I had to bake everything in the lower oven.  It was fine; it just took a little bit longer than I had planned on.  Of course this would happen on a day when I wanted to use both ovens.  I rarely cook with both.

It was 2pm and I was still baking and still hadn't showered.  I called Jim to see if he'd be able to pick up Ryan from preschool so I could finish what I was doing.  Initially he said he couldn't so I was stressing.  Jake had also fallen asleep on the couch and I didn't want to wake him in 45 minutes to go and pick up Ry.  I decided to stop baking, go shower, and go from there.  Just before I went to get in the shower, Jim called and said he could pick up Ry, whew.

I got ready and finished all my baking by 3:30pm.  I just had to frost the cookies and cinnamon rolls, which wouldn't take too long.

Ryan came home from preschool with his Valentine box filed with Valentine's.  He was excited to show them to me.
Ry's Valentine "box" that he made at school.  He came home with all of his Valentine's so we looked through them.  So cute.  He was excited with everything he received.

I had waited to give the boys their Valentine's present until Jim got home from work.  Jake was still asleep on the couch, but I decided we'd give Ry his present anyway.

Ryan was excited to open his present.  We gave him Lady and the Tramp, a new robot plate, a robot note pad (a "list" as he called it, ha ha), some robot pencils, and a super hero mask.

He also opened his Valentine from Grandpa and Grandma Mangelson.  They gave him $5 and a pencil.  He was thrilled.

Shortly after, Jake woke up from his nap.  He wasn't quite awake enough to enjoy opening his present so Jim had to help him.

Jake got everything that Ryan got except he got the movie Cars 2.  He also got a Valentine from Grandpa and Grandma Mangelson with money and a pencil.

The boys were thrilled with Cars 2 and wanted to watch it right away.  We still had an hour before we needed to leave to go to the McEwan's for dinner so we put Cars 2 on, and I finished frosting my baked goods.

Ryan fell asleep while watching the movie.  We had to wake him up when it was time to leave and he was a BEAR!  Whoa!!  I think it would've been better if he hadn't taken a nap.  We had to deal with his ornery little self all the way out to Saratoga Springs.

Kristy picked up cheese pull-a-parts and chef salads from The Pie for dinner.  Her hubs, Jeff, is in school right now and had class until 10pm so he wasn't able to join us for our get together.

Ryan finally warmed up about 10 minutes after we arrived.  He was loving Annie's dogs, Sadie and Dexter.  Luckily, the dogs were playful and nice to the boys.

The boys were just too busy playing with the dogs to sit down and eat so the adults sat down and ate without them.  The Pie tasted so good--I haven't had cheese pull-a-parts in so long, YUM!

After dinner, we sat around and visited.  Some how we got on the topic of my nephew's ring worm.  Kristy said, "Eww, he has a real worm (in his skin)?!?"  We laughed so hard--she pretty much made a Jessica Simpson-esque comment.

We also watched the video of Landon and Aiden that the photographers that wer e at the birth had made for Annie and Cory.  It was really nice to finally watch.  It caused Ryan to ask a lot of questions--one being where babies come from :)

Jake LOVED baby Landon and asked to hold him constantly.  Unfortunately, my boys started coughing today so I didn't want him too close for too long.  He did really well holding Landon though.
I asked Jim to take a picture of me holding the baby and this is what I got.  I didn't get any other pictures of me, Kristy, and Annie together so this is as good as it gets.  At least Kristy and Annie look cute in the picture on the right--I look ornery :)
Jim even took a turn holding the baby.  I asked Jim to hold him while I looked at some pictures of baby Aiden.  He looks thrilled doesn't he, ha ha.

Kristy left around 7:30pm.  She had to go home and make 8 batches of salt dough for scouts tomorrow night.  We packed up shortly after, but not until we got a couple more pictures.  I'm still mad that we didn't get any pictures of Kristy :(

Ryan didn't want to have his pictures taken.  I was ok with it, but Annalisa insisted I get a picture with both boys in it.  This is what we got :)

On the way home, Jake asked where we were going.  I told him we were going home.  He said, "NO!  Go back to baby Landon's!"  Too funny.

And one more funny thing that was said, we were putting the boys to bed and I was talking to Ryan about the day.  He asked again about babies and where they come from.  I told him they come from Heaven.  He said, "Well, can we buy one?"  I told him he needed to talk to dad about that.  SO, when Jim came over to say goodnight, the first thing Ryan asked was if we could buy a baby!!

Happy Valentine's Day!
