At the Flag Retirement in July, Becca Christiansen asked me to be the treasurer for the Family Readiness Group (FRG) for Jim's unit. The FRG of each unit helps keep the family members of soldiers informed and taken care of while the soldiers are home and especially while they are deployed. The only way I can kind of explain the FRG is they are kind of like the Relief Society in the church :)
Anyway, I was trained in October (yes, 3 months later) and told about the TAG Symposium (The Adjutant General) that is for FRG's that would be in November. I didn't think I would be going nor did I really care to, but as it got closer and got emails about going, I thought it would be best to go. Jim also had to go because it is strongly recommended that Senior Leaders go to the conference.
My mom so kindly obliged to babysitting our boys overnight so Jim and I could go to the conference. The conference started Friday November 4th and was held up at Snow Bird's Cliff Lodge. Of course there was a massive Winter snow warning for Friday and Saturday so all of the emails we got said to be prepared to stay overnight Saturday in the event that we couldn't get down the canyon. We prepared for the worse and packed an extra set of clothes for the boys to stay in Levan and for us to stay up at Snow Bird.
We took the boys to Levan Friday morning and then we headed to Salt Lake City from there. We stopped in American Fork for some lunch. We were going to go to Olive Garden, but it was SO busy there wasn't even a place to park so we went to Five Guys Burgers instead. Just an FYI for anyone else that goes there, a regular burger has 2 patties! I'm not a huge fan of meat anyway so I wasn't thrilled to see 2 patties on my burger. Other than that, the food was great. I even talked Jim into a Red Mango before we continued on to Salt Lake :)
After a quick stop to run through Carter's and Nordstrom Rack in Sandy, we made our way up the canyon. We got to Snowbird a little after 3pm and got checked in. The symposium started at 4pm. We listened to speakers with a few snacks and breaks in between until 9:30pm. It actually went by fairly fast, I learned quite a bit (especially at the couponing class, ha ha), and I got to know the ladies better that I'll be working with in the FRG.
When we first decided to actually go to and register for the conference, I was excited because without kids I thought Jim and I would be able to sneak in a movie and dinner--something fun. Well, when we found out the conference wouldn't be letting out until late in the evening and with the storm warning, we knew it would be all business on this trip without kids :(
After the conference wrapped up on Friday night, Jim and I went back to our room, got our stuff ready for the next day, and went to bed so we could get up bright and early for more meetings in the morning.
Saturday November 5, 2011:
I got up around 6am so I could get ready for the day and make it down in time to grab some breakfast. I was wishing I had gone with my gut and packed my Magic Bullet blender and some protein powder and just made myself a shake for breakfast. Next time, for sure!
The first set of speakers for the day were quite interesting so the time went by quickly. Around 10am, we left the main conference and did some breakout sessions where we got to choose which sessions we went to. We picked the finance session and the "tackling your phone tree" session, both were really good classes.
After these 2 classes, we broke for a catered lunch. The food was actually quite good. They served a really yummy salad, fajitas, and enchiladas. While eating lunch, they had a speaker that we listened to. After the speaker, there was another break out session where we got to choose 2 more classes to go to.
With the snow, some of the speakers weren't able to make it up the canyon and to the conference. But, the leaders of the conference didn't let the attendees know. So, Jim and I picked the next 2 classes that we wanted to go to not knowing that we wouldn't be learning what we thought. Holy cow--the next 2 hours drug by. I even fell asleep in the second class--it was awful! The information was not helpful to me and was a waste of my time. To keep myself awake, I watched videos of my kids that I had taken with my phone.
The rest of the conference went by so s-l-o-w! I was counting down to the 5 o'clock hour for sure. Finally, it was 5pm and time to leave. We had checked out of our room at the 9:30am break and took our luggage to the bell desk. We were the first in line at valet to get our truck and bags. For some reason, it took forever to get our truck. People who had came after us were getting in their vehicles and leaving. I had to finally go and ask where our truck was. The guy said he had been looking for us, right...
It was SO cold when we left. It wasn't snowing right at that moment, but it had been last night and all morning/afternoon. Jim's truck said it was 18 degrees!

The only picture I took at the conference and I took this as we were getting our truck from the valet :)

We headed down the canyon and back to Spanish Fork to get our car so we could go pick up our boys in Levan. We made a quick stop at Sam's Club to pick up some cream cheese. The new FRG is going to go sell breakfast to the guys at drill in the morning.
We made it to Levan around 7pm. My mom had made dinner so we ate there. We stayed and chatted for a bit, packed up our bags, and headed back to Spanish Fork. My boys had fun at Grandma's house and weren't super excited about going home. I'm glad they are that comfortable with my parents :)
We got the boys in the tub when we got home so I could just dress them in the morning since we have to get up early. Then we read books and went to bed. Daylight savings ends tonight, too, so we changed our alarm clocks so we wouldn't get up earlier than we needed to.
I had a lot of fun at the TAG Symposium, until the end of the second day, ha ha. I feel like I learned a lot and am more comfortable with my job in the FRG. I'm excited to become more involved and get to know some of the guys and their families that are in Jim's unit.
